A TRANSPARENT FORMULA

See how the quote is built

Estimated hours × hourly rateLabour buffer + direct expenses
  1. Labour subtotal = estimated hours × selected hourly rate.
  2. Uncertainty allowance = labour subtotal × buffer percentage. It applies to labour only.
  3. Suggested quote = labour subtotal + uncertainty allowance + direct project expenses.
  4. Effective hourly rate = suggested quote ÷ estimated hours. This includes direct expenses, so it is not the same as your labour rate or profit.

The buffer is a markup allowance, not a true target profit margin. A true profit-margin calculation uses a different formula. This tool does not estimate taxes, market rates, or whether a client will accept the quote.

Common questions

Should I include direct expenses?

Include project-specific costs that you want the client price to cover, such as materials or subcontractors. Avoid counting the same expense twice if your hourly rate already accounts for it.

Is the uncertainty buffer profit margin?

No. This calculator adds a percentage of the labour subtotal. That is a markup-style allowance for uncertain work or revisions, not a true profit margin. A true target margin requires dividing cost by one minus the margin percentage.

Does the quote include tax or platform fees?

No automatic tax or fee is applied. Rules and platform fees vary. Add a known direct project cost only when appropriate, and confirm any required tax or fee treatment for your situation.

Are my inputs saved or sent anywhere?

No. Calculations run in your browser. RateNest does not send or store the values you enter.
